Why Eagle Decks Are Different

High Desert, Not High Alpine

At about 6,600 feet, Eagle is the driest and warmest of the Eagle County towns — sagebrush and high desert rather than dense timber. Less snow than Vail, far more sun, and wind that runs the valley almost daily.

🌵

High Desert Conditions

Eagle is dry. Wood shrinks, checks, and opens gaps faster here than in wetter mountain towns, and boards installed in spring can move noticeably by August. We account for that in material choice and gapping.

💨

Valley Wind

Wind runs the Eagle valley consistently, and it's a design input for anything with a roof. Pergolas and covers get anchored for it, and solid privacy panels are usually the wrong call — they catch wind like a sail.

☀️

Hard Sun, Little Shade

Sagebrush country means limited mature tree canopy, so decks take direct sun most of the day. Dark composite gets genuinely hot underfoot here, and stain fades faster than owners expect. Color selection matters more than usual.

🏛️

Town of Eagle Permits

Eagle runs its own building department, separate from unincorporated Eagle County and different from Vail or Edwards. We pull the town permit and coordinate footing and final inspections.

Built for This Community

Built for Eagle's High Desert Climate

Eagle sits at about 6,600 feet — the lowest and driest of the Eagle County towns, and it feels nothing like Vail thirty minutes east. This is sagebrush and high desert, not dense timber, and the building conditions follow.

Dryness is the first factor. Natural wood shrinks and checks noticeably faster in Eagle than in wetter mountain towns; boards installed in a damp spring can open real gaps by late summer. Composite and PVC avoid the issue entirely, which is why they make up most of what we install here.

Wind and sun are the other two. Valley wind runs most days and is a genuine design input for pergolas and covered structures — solid privacy panels behave like sails and put real load on posts, while cable and aluminum let it pass. And with little mature canopy, decks take direct sun all day, so dark composite gets hot underfoot and color selection matters more than it does under trees. Permits go through the Town of Eagle, which runs its own building department.

FAQ

Questions About Decks in Eagle

Straight answers about what to expect — no marketing fluff.

How much does a deck cost in Eagle?
Most Eagle projects run $18,000–$65,000+ — generally below Vail or Edwards for comparable scope, since snow-load requirements are lower and lots are more often flat. Written estimate after a free site visit.
Why does wood move so much on my Eagle deck?
Dry air. Eagle is high desert, and natural wood shrinks and checks faster here than in wetter mountain towns — boards installed during a damp spring can open visible gaps by August. It's the most common complaint we hear about wood decks in the valley, and it's the main reason composite and PVC dominate our work here.
Do I need to worry about wind on a pergola?
Yes. Valley wind runs most days in Eagle and it's a real design input for anything with a roof. We anchor covered structures for it rather than assembling to a kit spec. It also affects railing — solid privacy panels catch wind like a sail, while cable and aluminum let it through.
Who issues permits in Eagle?
The Town of Eagle runs its own building department, separate from unincorporated Eagle County and different from Vail or Edwards. We pull the town permit and coordinate the footing and final inspections.
What decking color should I pick in Eagle?
Lighter than you might elsewhere. Sagebrush country means little mature shade, so decks take direct sun most of the day and dark composite gets genuinely hot underfoot. We'll walk you through color and surface temperature before you commit.
Is Eagle cheaper to build in than Vail?
Usually, yes, for comparable scope. Snow-load requirements are lower at 6,600 feet than at 8,150, lots are more often flat, and there's no design review board process. That said, sun and wind exposure mean material selection still matters.
