Freeze-Thaw Is the Enemy — Base Prep Is the Answer
When a paver patio sinks, heaves, or sprouts weeds in year two, the pavers were never the problem — the base under them was. Colorado’s freeze-thaw cycles and clay soils destroy hardscape that’s laid on skipped or shortcut ground work. We put most of the labor where you’ll never see it: underneath.
100+ Freeze-Thaw Cycles Per Year
Water under a paver freezes, expands, and lifts it — then drops it crooked in the thaw. We excavate, compact structural base in lifts, and screed a proper bedding layer so the surface stays flat.
Expansive Clay Soils
Front Range clay swells when wet and shrinks when dry. The cure is depth and compaction: enough compacted base to isolate the finished surface from the moving soil below.
Drainage & Permeable Options
Every project is graded to move water away from your foundation — and where drainage is the whole battle, permeable paver systems let water pass straight through the surface.
High-Altitude Sun & Slip Safety
Intense UV fades cheap surfaces fast — porcelain and quality pavers hold their color. Around pools and hot tubs we spec slip-resistant textures, because a beautiful surface still has to be safe when wet.
Paver patio with steps worked into the slope and a hot tub surround — laid over an excavated, compacted base built for foothills freeze-thaw.
Stone, Tile & Paver Installation Built on Proper Base Prep
Deck Doctor Inc installs paver and natural stone patios, walkways, stone steps, pool decks and hot tub surrounds, driveway aprons, and porcelain tile — including tile over existing concrete. Every one of those projects lives or dies by what’s under it. Our standard process: excavation, structural base compacted in lifts, a screeded bedding layer, precise laying, and polymeric-sand joints that harden to lock the surface together and keep weeds and washout at bay.
The honest material comparison: concrete pavers are the best value for most projects — huge range of styles, strong in freeze-thaw, and any single paver can be lifted and re-set. Natural stone(flagstone and Colorado buff sandstone among others) is the premium tier: every piece unique, priced accordingly. Porcelain tile and slabs are nearly fade-proof and stain-proof and are the go-to for resurfacing sound existing concrete — but they demand a stable substrate, a judgment call we make on the walkthrough. Where drainage is a problem, permeable paver systems let water pass through the surface instead of sheeting toward your house.
Hardscape also rarely stands alone. Steps and walkways tie a walkout basement to the yard, a paver patio anchors a porch or covered patio project, and on sloped lots the patio often needs a retaining wall to carve out the flat space in the first place. We design and build all of it as one coordinated project — or as the hardscape phase of a full custom outdoor build.
We’ve laid stone and pavers across the Front Range and foothills for over three decades — from courtyard patios in Centennial to hillside hardscape in Morrison. For how a patio should connect to the house itself, our post on seamless indoor-outdoor living is a good place to start.

What Colorado Homeowners Are Saying
Deck Doctor is a wonderful company that I will use again! Brandon is a general contractor with experience in many types of outdoor construction. His crew were ideal — respectful, hard-working, very knowledgeable, cleaned up behind themselves. The project was well priced and done in a timely manner.
Had the pergola built last December, could not be happier. Took me quite a while to write a review but 10 stars all around. The team they have is amazing! Would definitely recommend!
Brandon and his team are amazing! They do what they say, when they say, and the quality of work is top-notch. My deck needed a complete overhaul due to rotting wood. His crew showed up early and cleaned up thoroughly every single day. Highly recommend!
One of the best experiences I have had with a contractor. Brandon walked me through the options and was honest and straightforward. Everything he said would happen, happened and on time. The final product is perfect!
