At This Altitude, Finishes Fail in Half the Time
A stain that lasts 3–5 years at sea level is done in 1–2 here. Mile-high UV, bone-dry air, freeze-thaw, and months of snow contact team up on exposed wood. Product and prep matter more here than almost anywhere else.
UV Rises ~10% Every 1,000 Feet
High-altitude sun breaks down finishes fast, then greys and embrittles the wood underneath. We use a stain formulated for Colorado UV — not a big-box one-coat product.
Bone-Dry Air Pulls Wood Apart
Single-digit humidity wicks moisture out of boards until they check, cup, and splinter. A penetrating oil-based stain feeds the wood instead of just filming over it.
Freeze-Thaw Exploits Bare Wood
Once the finish fails, water soaks in, freezes, and expands — 100+ times a year. A properly sealed surface is the difference between refinishing now and structural repair later.
Snow Sits on Decks for Months
Front Range and mountain decks carry snow from October to May. Two sealed coats shed that moisture all winter instead of drinking it in.
Full composite deck with two covered entryways on a hillside log home — engineered for 80+ mph gusts, 4 ft snow loads, and 30 years of mountain UV.
Deck Refinishing & Staining, Done the Right Way
Deck refinishing is the most cost-effective thing you can do for a structurally sound wood deck — and the most abused service in the industry. A real refinish is wash, sand, stain, seal: a deep power wash and brightening, sanding down to sound wood, then two coats of penetrating stain. Skipping the prep is why so many decks peel a year after "refinishing." We don't skip it — we've been doing this across the Front Range and mountains, from Denver to Evergreen, since 1993.
The product matters as much as the prep. We use a premium two-part oil-based penetrating stain that protects for up to two years in Colorado's UV — most contractors use a one-part stain that gives you roughly one season at altitude. Penetrating oil feeds and seals the wood itself, where water-based films sit on top and peel. You choose the look: solid pigment(including paint-matching your home), semi-transparent, or clear to show off the natural grain.
Refinishing only makes sense on a sound deck, so we tell you the truth first. Grey doesn't mean dead — but soft wood does. Minor problems get fixed before we stain; bigger ones become an honest deck repair conversation, and our repair + refinish combo handles both in one project. Done with the restaining cycle entirely? A wood-to-composite conversion ends it for good. Not sure if it's a DIY weekend job? Here's when to call the professionals.
Plan on a 1–2 year cycle for wood decks at this elevation — wood railings and pergolas need the same protection. Composite never needs stain but benefits from our deep-clean & revive. It starts with a free walkthrough and a straight answer.

Grey, Weathered Boards
UV has stripped the finish and greyed the fibers. We wash, brighten, sand, and restain — most grey decks come back beautifully.
⚠️ Fading FastPeeling or Flaking Old Stain
A failed film finish has to come off before anything good goes on. We sand it out properly — no staining over the problem.
⚠️ Needs Real PrepSplinters Underfoot
Dry, checked boards that bite bare feet. Sanding to sound wood plus a penetrating oil stain restores a smooth, sealed surface.
⚠️ Family HazardChange the Color
Solid pigment stains can match your home's palette or cover mismatched old boards in one uniform, durable color.

Two coats of our premium two-part oil-based penetrating stain, in the solid, semi-transparent, or clear finish you chose.
4. Seal, Walk Through & Pay
Sealed, cleaned up, and walked through together. You don't pay for labor until the job is done and you're satisfied.
What Colorado Homeowners Are Saying
Deck Doctor is a wonderful company that I will use again! Brandon is a general contractor with experience in many types of outdoor construction. His crew were ideal — respectful, hard-working, very knowledgeable, cleaned up behind themselves. The project was well priced and done in a timely manner.
Had the pergola built last December, could not be happier. Took me quite a while to write a review but 10 stars all around. The team they have is amazing! Would definitely recommend!
Brandon and his team are amazing! They do what they say, when they say, and the quality of work is top-notch. My deck needed a complete overhaul due to rotting wood. His crew showed up early and cleaned up thoroughly every single day. Highly recommend!
One of the best experiences I have had with a contractor. Brandon walked me through the options and was honest and straightforward. Everything he said would happen, happened and on time. The final product is perfect!
What Does Deck Refinishing Actually Cost?
Square footage, deck condition, prep required, and finish choice all affect price. Typical scopes below. Written estimate after your free walkthrough, always.
Single-Level Wash + Stain
The classic refresh for a standard wood deck — full wash, sand, and two-coat oil-based stain and seal.
Large / Multi-Level Refinish
Bigger footprints, multiple levels, stairs, and wood railings — the full treatment across the whole structure.
Repair + Refinish Combo
Board replacement, hardware, and railing fixes first, then the complete wash–sand–stain–seal — one project, one crew.
Composite Deep-Clean & Revive
Deep cleaning and color revival for composite decks — no staining needed, just the dinge and grime gone.
A Failed Finish Is How Rot Gets Started
- !Water soaks in flat instead of beading up — the finish is gone and the rot clock is running
- !Boards have gone grey and feel dry or fuzzy — UV is breaking down the wood fibers themselves
- !Stain is peeling or flaking, exposing bare wood to sun and snow
- !Splinters where the surface used to be smooth — checking is opening the boards up
- !Soft, dark spots around fasteners or board ends — that's past refinishing and needs repair first
Catch It Before It Becomes a Repair
